The early U.S manned spaceflight program

Armstong descended the ladder first, joined by Aldrin about 20 minutes later. Altogether they spent about 2.5 hours exploring an area around them the size of a baseball field. They set up experimental equipment, collected rock samples and took photographs. Then, they reboarded the LM. Following a sleep period and launch preparation, they fired the ascent rocket. The top half of the lander was lifted into orbit to redock with the command module and Collins. The bottom half of the lunar module remained on the surface.
